Sigma Symbol in Greek Alphabet

Sigma (uppercase Σ, lowercase σ) is the 18th letter of the Modern Greek alphabet. In Gematria it has the value of 200. The alternative form of sigma (ς) must be used in word-final position. The Greek letter sigma was derived from the Phoenician letter šīn, meaning tooth. The small letter sigma (σ) is used to represent standard deviation in math and statistics. It is also used to show syllable in linguistic, a shielding constant in chemistry and sum of divisors in math. The capital letter sigma (Σ) means to sum up in mathematics.

The lowercase letter sigma (σ) is used to represent the Weierstrass sigma-function in math, the standard deviation in theoretical spectral analysis, the elasticity of substitution in macroeconomics, the volatility of stocks in finance, the damping ratio in electrical engineering, cross-sections and Pauli matrices in physics, velocity dispersion in astronomy, and "stress" in engineering fields. On the other hand, the uppercase letter sigma (Σ) is used as a symbol for the covariance matrix in statistics, the busy beaver function in computer science, a class of baryons, and self-energy in physics.
